Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge - Spread Your Wings

Happy Monday!! I hope you had an awesome weekend and that you're ready for a new challenge on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. Our theme this week is, Spread Your Wings. I created a mixed media piece that is a little on the steampunk side. I created lots of rusted pieces for my panel and created a background using yummy Distress Crayons. See the tutorial below on how I created this mixed media panel. Enjoy!

For my focal point I wanted to create something with wings. I die cut and emboss the Tim Holtz Layered Butterfly Bigz die.

I dab on Broken China, Mermaid Lagoon, Evergreen Bough and Twisted Citron Distress Paint with a dauber in random areas on the butterfly and allow that to completely dry.

When the butterfly is completely dry, I dab on Black Soot Distress Paint over the entire butterfly and allow that to sit for a bit allowing some areas of the black paint to dry.

I gently rub away the black paint that is still wet. You can see how it created wonderful depth and dimension to the embossed areas.

I create the dress form from the Tim Holtz Mini Sewing Room movers & shapers die from one of the patterned papers from the Menagerie paper stash. I also cut another dress form from white chipboard and adhere the patterned paper dress form on top of the chipboard dress form and ink the edges with Black Soot Distress Ink

To create the background, I cut a 7" x 8" piece of white chipboard and add the Tim Holtz Gears and Numeric stencils in random areas with Ranger Texture Paste. I allow all the stenciling to completely dry before adding distress crayon pigment.

I begin to add Peacock Feathers, Mermaid Lagoon and Vintage Photo Distress Crayons by scribbling on the pigment and then rubbing it in with my finger tips to blend them together.

I want to have lightened areas in the background so I decide to add Twisted Citron to the distress crayon mix.

I continue the process until the entire background is completed.

My background is complete but I'm not happy with the little bits of white areas showing through as you can see above, so I add Mermaid Lagoon and Twisted Citron Distress Spray in random areas to the background. I also cut several gears from the Tim Holtz Gearhead thinlits die set from Neenah Solar White 110 lb. card stock that I will be adding to the background.

I distress the edges of the background with a Prima Distressing Tool.

I then ink the edges with Black Soot Distress Ink using a mini ink blending tool.

I want to frame the focal piece of the panel, so I create a frame from the Tim Holtz Vintage Cabinet Card Bigz die and ink it with Black Soot Distress Paint. I let that completely dry and then I emboss the entire frame with the Tammy Tutterow Horsehair embossing folder to give the frame texture.

I use Prima Rust Effect Paste to give my frame a rusted metal look. This paste contains a sandy grit and is so easy to apply to get that rusted metal effect. Use a pouncing action with the paint brush to apply the paste. I first apply the dark brown paste, then the rust colored paste and then lighten it in areas with the yellow paste. I then go back over random areas with the dark brown paste to finish the effect. I do this same process with all the gearhead pieces and the dress form also.

I place a backing behind the vintage cabinet frame made from one of the patterned papers in the Tim Holtz Menagerie paper stash. I add the dress form (which I decided to rust) in the center of the butterfly and add some May Arts twine in coordinating colors. I place the rusted gearheads in the top right and bottom left corners of the panel and some Prima Gold Rush Glass Glitter and coordinating seed beads in the top left and bottom right corners of the panel. The sentiment is from the Tim Holtz Small Talk sticker set and I add that to the center bottom of the frame to complete the entire piece.

I hoped you enjoyed seeing the process I used to create my mixed media Spread Your Wings art piece. Please join us in all the fun and add your project to Simon Says Stamp's Monday Challenge Blog for your chance to win a $50 gift voucher to their amazing store.
