Hi Friends, thanks for stopping by! It's 5 for Friday and today, I created some beautiful shabby style Valentine's Day cards. I love this holiday, it's one of my favorites. I know it's typically a day for lovers but I celebrate this day telling everyone in my life how much I love them. I've created my cards using a masking background technique and I've made some handmade flowers with Tammy's gorgeous dies. So come along with me for a tutorial on how to put these lovely cards together and get some ideas of your own to create beautiful cards to show those people in your life how much you love them.

Check out all 5 designer's projects for more inspiration here.

To create the mask, I cut a heart out of a 5" x 7" piece of Neenah Solar White 110 lb. card stock with the Spellbinder Classic Hearts die. I use the largest die in the set.

To create the the background for the masked panel, I cut a 5" x 7" piece of Neenah Solar White 110 lb. card stock and place that in the Misti tool. Using Versamark Embossing Ink, I ink the Simon Says Stamp Love Is background stamp and stamp that onto the panel. I am creating two cards at the same time, so I create two of these panels using the same background stamp.

Here, you can see both of the panels after I ink them and sprinkled Hero Arts White Embossing Powder on each.

I heat the embossing powder with a heat tool and here you can see a close up of the backgrounds I've created for the card.

I place the mask with the cut out heart over one of the embossed panels I created above and ink that with Barn Door Distress Ink using a mini ink blending tool.

Make sure to tape the mask down over the panel so it doesn't move around as you are inking the exposed area creating the heart.

I remove the mask and you can see a perfect heart has been left behind.

I now ink the rest of the panel with Spun Sugar Distress Ink. You do not need to worry about your ink blending tool going over the red ink. By using the darkest ink first and then blending in the lightest ink, it will only soften the lines of the heart leaving a romantic looking edge instead of harsh edge.

For the second card panel, I place the cut out heart on the embossed background in the center. I use a non permanent adhesive, very lightly, on the back of the heart to attach it to the panel so it doesn't move around while I'm inking the area around it. I can then easily remove it without any damage to the area underneath the heart.

I ink the entire background around the heart mask with Barn Door Distress Ink.

I remove the heart and now I can ink it with the lighter Distress Ink color, Spun Sugar. Again, you do not need to worry about the red ink running into the light pink heart.

I ink the heart with Spun Sugar Distress Ink as you can see above.

Here are the two card panels I will be using to create the cards.

I cut away the edges along the top and bottom of the panel that contain no words and a little along the sides of the panel to the left and right of the hearts. To brighten the white embossed words of the background stamp and make them pop, I gently go over each panel with a baby wipe to remove any ink that is left sitting on top of the letters.

I want my cards to be a little on the shabby side so I distress the edges using a Prima Distressing Tool.

After distressing the edges, I ink the edges of the panels with Vintage Photo Distress Ink first allowing some of the ink onto the inside of the edges. I then ink the edges only with Ground Espresso Distress Ink.

To create the second layer panel on the card, I cut two 5" x 7" pieces of Neenah Solar White 110 lb. card stock and ink each panel with Vintage Photo Distress ink using a mini ink blending tool.

I add the Tammy Tutterow Dear Ruby background stamp in random areas on the panels with Potting Soil Archival Ink.

I distress the edges of each panel.

After distressing the edges, I ink them with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

I cut two 5-1/4" x 7-1/4" panels. One is cut from Bazzill Cotton Candy card stock and the other from Bazzill Wax Lips card stock and adhere all the panels together with double-sided tape.

To create the mini envelopes on the cards, I use Tammy Tutterow Pointed and Notched Mini Envelope dies. The die creates crease lines which I crease using a bone folder.

I use the Tammy Tutterow Horsehair embossing folder to emboss one of the mini envelopes. These embossing folders come with a slit at the top and because I didn't want the flap to be embossed, I positioned the mini envelope flap outside of the folder through the slit. This is a wonderful feature of her embossing folders!!

Here, you can see the mini envelope embossed and ready for the card.

To create the flowers for the card, I use Tammy Tutterow Shabby Posies die set. I use the second smallest flower petal to create the flowers. First, cut three of these petals from patterned paper.

Leave one of the petals unaltered. For the second petal, cut a slit from one of the openings to the center of the flower as shown above.

For the third petal, completely remove one of the petals.

I filmed portions of creating the flower that you can see below.

Shaping the base petal.

Shaping the middle petal.

Shaping the top petal.

Shaping and forming the center petal. (The petal with the slit.)

Shaping and forming the top petal, the flower petal with one petal removed, and putting them all together to create the flower.

I'm sorry the last two videos are sideways and a bit out of focus but I hope you can get an idea on how to shape and form these flowers. I will work on my video skills, I promise.

Here, is a clear photo of the three petals after they have been formed just before assembling them together.

Here's the completed flower after the stamens are added to the center.

I added some metal embellishments Tammy Tutterow Shortie and Frayed Tabs with sentiments from the Simon Says Stamp You Matter and Love stamp sets. I hope you got some useful tips, tricks and inspiration for your weekend crafting. Thanks again for stopping by!

  2. WOW... Thank you so much for the vids showing just how to process the flowers! I had read similar instructions before, and they weren't even in the neighborhood of how clear you made it in the vids.
