Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge - Try To Contain Yourself

Hi Everyone! It's time for another fun challenge over on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog. This week we're asking you to alter a container such as a box, can, cup or whatever else you can think of that acts as a container.  For my project, I chose to alter a wooden box to store my favorite Paper Artsy Flower stamps.

I started with a wooden box that you can find at any local big box craft store.  The box I chose to alter measures 11-1/4" x 5-1/2" x 4-1/4".

I painted the entire box inside and out with Broken China Distress Paint and let that completely dry.

When the Broken China Distress Paint was COMPLETELY dry, I added Evergreen Bough Distress Paint in random areas.

After the Evergreen Bough Distress Paint areas are COMPLETELY dry, it's time to work on giving the box a "metal" look , I chose Antiqued Bronze Distress Paint for my "metal" layer. You need to work in sections and apply a thin layer of paint in some areas and thick layers of paint in other areas. By using a heat tool you can control the drying process. You want the bronze paint to dry where it was painted on thin but you don't want the thick layers to completely dry because you will rub off the paint in those areas with a cloth. This will give the box a worn, metal look.

Here, you can see areas where the paint was rubbed off with a textured cotton towel giving the box a look of worn metal.

Continue to work in sections of the box.

The box is finished inside and out and I set it aside to completely dry.

Now that the paint on the box is completely dry, I begin stamping on the floral images that I will hand paint. Here, I'm using a flower from the Paper Artsy Jofy13 stamp set.

Here, you can see the transferred image and how well these stamps work on wood.

Here, I'm adding a series of images using the Paper Artsy Jofy JM33 stamp set.

Here, I stamped the first set of flowers and will add a couple more to create a beautiful patch of flowers.

Here, you can see the series of stamps that created the flower patch.

I continue to add another larger flower to the edge and use the Paper Artsy EKC01 stamp set.

Any areas that do not stamp well can be filled in with a Copic Multiliner 0.03 Black Ink Marker.

I begin painting the images on the box with Paper Artsy Fresco Finish Paints. I choose colors that will blend well together.

As you paint, make sure each area you just painted is completely dry so you don't accidentally smudge your previous work.

Here, I finished painting the last of the main flowers on my box and set the box aside to completely dry.

I begin adding other images to the box. Here, I added a border from the Paper Artsy Jofy13 stamp set. The border is a little long and will stamp over my painted flowers so I place two sticky post-it notes over the painted flowers to prevent this from happening.

I decided to add some butterflies and a small flower from the Paper Artsy EKC02 stamp set to my box. As you can see, the bottom butterfly smudged, this is because I was holding the box in my hand as I stamped it. (Don't know what I was thinking, or should I say, I wasn't thinking.) This is okay though, because I will paint in the butterfly and the smudged image won't be noticeable.

Also, you will notice I added some doodling to my border using a Ranger Fude Ball 1.5MM black pen.

Here, are my finished butterflies.

I want to add more images to the bottom corner of my box, so I create some masking pieces to cover the stem of my flower using sticky post-it notes. I can now stamp right over the area and not affect the stem of my flower.

Here, you can see how the masked area will prevent overstamping.

My stem has not been stamped over and I will fill in the areas where the stamping didn't transfer with a Copic Multiliner 0.03 black ink marker.

Because this box will hold my favorite Paper Artsy flower stamps I wanted to paint the word "flowers" on it and used the Paper Artsy Jofy21 stamp set to spell out the word. I painted the inside of each letter using a Silver Black Paint Brush. See the tiny white tip that I dipped in paint, this brush is perfect for those tight areas.

I wanted to add one more little critter to my box and chose to add a bee.

Here is my completed box with all my favorite Paper Artsy flower stamps. It's perfect and a beautiful addition to my craft room.

I hoped you enjoyed seeing the process I used to create the wooden box stamp container. Please join us in all the fun and add your project to Simon Says Stamp's Monday Challenge Blog for your chance to win a $50 gift voucher to their amazing store.

    1. I'm so happy my project has inspired you. For me, that is the best compliment, thank you! I noticed my product link list was missing the ink I used for the stamping process when I saw your question, so I quickly fixed it. The ink I used was Ranger Archival Jet Black Ink. Thanks again for your sweet comment.

    1. Thank you so much, Chris! I loved the string container you made and I'm definitely going to make one of those for my twine. I have a few that I'm always grabbing to use and they get all tangled. The design you made with the cat's twine tails is so adorable. I fell in love with it and have to make one.
